watching the calm sun wake.

i can feel myself going back

back to the hot, oppressive air mingling with the smell of the ocean

i am laughing

my company keeping me warm with stories, and crude, ill-formed innuendo

like always

it was so early the sea was awash with oranges and yellows

we had sneaked out to watch the sunrise because i insisted we do it at least once before i was on that plane again

giggling and shushing all the way across camp, getting lost and crossing through what we realized were fields ripe with the possibility of those square-headed snakes

“where…” i wheezed, “..is the beach again?” i was laughing at her, her who was screeching at the height of the grass around us

finally, we sat on the rocks by the shoreline

watching the calm sun wake

i can feel myself going back

back to the sea

back to home
